The Messerschmitt Me 323 was a variant of the giant transport glider Me 321. As towing this Gigant of 55 meters wingspan could be hazardous and to solve the problem to bring it back once unloaded, the idea to power it with four engines led to the first prototype. The second prototype and series machines were all fitted with six Gnome-Rhône 14N and were able to lift up nearly 30 tons of supplies or troops. Despite unsecured skies, the Gigant performed well until the end of 1944 when nearly all airframes have been destroyed on the air or on the ground. It has had no counterparts among the Allies.
Messerschmitt built 198 Me 323 between 1942 and 1943.
