Nieuport-Delage Ni-D 29 from 7e Escadrille, 33e RAM (French Air Force).

The Nieuport-Delage Ni-D 29 was a French-built single-seat biplane fighter. The new design dated back from the summer 1917 when Engineer Gustave Delage understood that rotary piston engine have reach their limits. Several inline powerplant were tested and the Hispano-Suiza 8Fb V-8 of 300 HP gave the best results. The Service technique de l'aéronautique (STAé) issued a specification in January 1918 for a new fighter and so a competition between several French and British design was held on March. Despite the fastest, the Nieuport lacked by its rate of climb. After some improvements, it became the best choice and a pre-production batch was ordered on August 1918. As the fastest fighter online, several countries ordered it despite surplus and bargain brand new fighters built just before the end of WWI. Those orders reached nearly 1 600 airframes for ten Air Forces with licence built in Spain, Belgium and Italy. The high speed led to dedicated racing variant setting eight world records. Only one airframe (fighter) survived and is kept among Musée Air et Espace reserves at Paris Le Bourget (2021).

This page lists all the films that feature a variation of the Nieuport-Delage Ni-D 29 : Nakajima Ko 4 (Japan), Macchi-Nieuport 29 (Italy), Swedish J2 or the civil and racer airframes.
