Northrop F-20 Scorpion seen in Starman.

The Northrop F-20 was a further evolution of Northrop's F-5E Tiger II intended to be competitive with contemporary fighter designs but keeping cost less expensive to purchase and operate. If the first studies were made as F-5G, the development of the airframe with a single new powerfull engine (the General Electric F404-GE-100 turbofan) and modern avionics and beyond-visual-range air-to-air capability of the AN/APG-67 radar improved so much capabilities that Northrop renamed it as F-20 Tigershark in 1982. But U.S. policies and international relationship had evolved so much that such programm failed to find market sales and the cancellation has occurred after only three prototypes of which two crashed in 1984/1985.
