Saab J 21A (top) and Saab J 21R.

The Saab 21 is a Swedish fighter and attack aircraft which first flight occured on 30 July 1943. First studies were done before the outbreak of World War 2 but the definitive desing started in 1941. Using some unconventional shape like a monoplane twin-boom aircraft, the prototype upon which the engine was positioned within the rear of the center fuselage, directly behind the pilot, to drive a rear-facing propeller mounted as a pusher configuration. So the 21 became one of the first service aircraft in the world to be fitted with an ejector seat. The aircraft's nose section housed a powerfull armament and the front wheel as the aircraft got a tricycle landing gear. First intended to be powered by a British Bristol Taurus, then an American Pratt & Whitney R-1830 Twin Wasp (both radial engines), the new plane got eventually a localised and more reliable version of the German Daimler-Benz DB 605 provided by Svenska Flygmotor AB. Introduction was on December 1945 at a time where jet propulsion was seen of the future of aviation by Swedish Air Force.
So, Saab started studies to convert a 21 with a de Havilland Goblin. Despite few visual differences (lack of the propeller and the stabilizer of the tailplane had to be raised to avoid jet blast), many others modification were required. The maiden flight of the 21R occurred on 10 March 1947 this leading to a service life between 1950 and 1956.

298 Saab 21 were built of which 64 were converted as 21 R.

This page lists all films that feature a variation of the Saab 21.
