Grumman F9F-5 Panther

However, the footage of the airplane crash is really that of a 1951 Grumman F9F mishap aboard the USS Midway (CV-41). Commander George Chamberlain Duncan attempted a landing but hit the desk's edge on 23rd June 1951. The pilot suffered only burns.

When the US Navy picks up the Red October's crew, this drops a torpedo into the water, which is detonated before it can hit the Red October (as part of the charade allowing Ramius to secretly defect with the submarine)
