Hi there. I only discovered this site through the IMCDB forum the other day and I'm still trying getting the hang of things.
1) Does every page have to follow a uniform format or can people personalize things a little?
2) Can we post full size images as "main images" rather the 500 pixel wide thumbnails? A standard defination DVD capture shouldn't be more than 720 pixels wide anyway.
3) Is OK to post galleries of stills for some aircraft (as long as there aren't too many)
4) How do I get a new film page added to the "complete list" and unidentified aircraft added to the other unidentifieds? Or can only an admin do that?
5) Is it OK to add dialogue quotes which contain swearwords, or do I have to *** it out?
Some questions/suggestions
Re: Some questions/suggestions
Hey G-MANN, good to see you on! I am glad you brought these things up because they are great questions.
We may need to revisit these items again when we get more users, but for now I really think that uniformity is key to a clean, easy to use site. I realize it's maybe a little different in the formatting and maybe a little more strict than IMCDb. I really hope that doesn't drive people away. I really appreciate your contributions, so please keep them coming.
I have had to go back in some of the movie pages I have created and taken out excessive pictures that didn't really add to the page. Tim told me he took out some on his own pages as well. We are just trying to keep the site clutter free. But I think that there's plenty of room here in the forum for a section for additional film pictures. I can create a special section. Maybe we can add a link in the "See also" section below the IMDb and Wikipedia links? Maybe a link titled, "More aircraft pictures on our forum", or a more simple title?
I don't think we need pictures on each film page to be larger than 500 pixels. That's pretty good size for the wiki film pages I think. But the beauty is, if someone wants a better close-up of a particular shot, they can simply click on the picture once for a larger view and click it again for the original size. On top of that, I don't know how to go larger than 500px. From my experience, if you type in anything larger than 500px, it won't make a difference. But by all means, upload the largest you have, then we can check out the larger file on the appropriate page, if desired. I have actually gone back in some of my pages and made the movie posters smaller than 500. I usually keep the aircraft 500 however.
We have to manually add each film page to each list. The more lists it applies to, the more work that is required. That part is real easy though. I think Tim (Bthebest) might have touched on it in the Apocalypse Now talk page. The hardest, most time consuming part of this site is still just capturing the screenshots.
I appreciate you asking about the cursing. I don't believe it would add enough to be worth it. I would like this to be a 100% family friendly site. If we leave cursing out, it offends no one, if we include it, some may be offended.
I want people to enjoy contributing to this site just as much as I want people to enjoy looking at it. Because of this, all these things are of course debatable and can always be changed if necessary.

Re: Some questions/suggestions
500px width was chosen for both aesthetics as well as server bandwidth and wiki caching.
feel free to upload whatever size images you have and anyone who wants to see your high res can do so by clicking on it.
have fun!

I agree with pretty much everything already said. Maybe in terms of galleries, at some point we can create separate pages for galleries of aircraft? This keeps the main pages clean but still gives the opportunity to display pics.

Re: Some questions/suggestions
If we want to do a gallery in the wiki vs one in the forum, that's fine with me. We could give the forum gallery a try if you guys want. In a forum users can make comments, and of course always continue to add pictures to the page. But if it is best to do it in the wiki, I can delete the Additional Pictures section.Bthebest wrote:I agree with pretty much everything already said. Re: Some questions/suggestions
One thing I forgot to ask - is it OK to list models? By this I don't mean radio controlled toys, I mean things like the jumbo jet that Uma Thurman flies to Tokyo in, in Kill Bill Volume 1, which is clearly a model.
Re: Some questions/suggestions
yeah CGI planes etc are fine - especially if they're clearly representing a real aircraft. Just make sure you note in the comment that it is a CGI/model

Just want to get a couple of site niggles off my chest
Mainly, do we have to have that spam preventer thing where you have to enter the text? I find those things a pain in the arse (on other sites as well). Or do we really risk getting spam here?
Secondly, only a minor niggle but do we have to provide wikipedia links? It's just one thing to have to add (I'm finding the wiki process a little fiddly and taking longer than I'd like it to, but then that's probably just what wiki sites are like). I like Wikipedia but I'm wonder if those links are really essential. The IMDB page links I think are more important, and the IMCDB links advertise that site. If you really want the wikipedia links then OK.
Question: How is a minor page edit different from a normal page edit? I'm not always sure when to tick that box (I tend to use when I'm just changing text or correcting errors)

Re: Just want to get a couple of site niggles off my chest
How often are you having to enter in text? I hate them too but we did have to add it since we were getting unwanted users. You should only have had to see the recaptcha block once and that's when you had to create your account. If anyone is seeing it more often than that, these are things I need to know and they should not be happening. At this time I don't feel that it's necessary to have it pop up except at registration.G-MANN wrote:Mainly, do we have to have that spam preventer thing where you have to enter the text? I understand that wikipedia is an additional link that some may not feel needed or beneficial. I like both the IMDb and Wikipedia links. Plus our site incorporates a little of each. I think the more people become familiar with Wikipedia, the more they become familiar with IMPDb.
I am not sure at this time what the big deal of marking minor change on an edit. I am sure there's a good reason. I feel it's not a big deal to just mark it. I check that box when I am just making a minor text change just like you and when I don't want to take any credit away from the main creator.
