The Handley Page Harrow was the type 54 among the manufacturer inventory. It was a heavy bomber designed from a former unsuccessfull transport monoplane of this manufacturer. Seeking a 'stop-gap' heavy bomber to facilitate the expansion of the RAF's bomber squadrons, the Air Ministry wrote Specification B.29/35 based on this concept. So an order for one hundred aircraft was signed on August 1936 and the first flight occured on next October. On 13 January 1937, the first Harrow was delivered to No. 214 Squadron; by the end of that same year, all one hundred of the RAF-bound units had been delivered.<br>
Despite several modern features, the type's performance were low and so in 1939, it lost the bomber role and was used as transports and ambulance aircraft, starting by routinely support British Expeditionary Force during the Phoney War until the Fall of France. The last ones were withdrawn from use only in May 1945.<br>
Three Harrows were modified by Flight Refuelling Limited, which installed the refuelling apparatus along with additional fuel tanks, after which the company used them on transatlantic routes. In 1940, the two based at Gander, Newfoundland were pressed into service with the Royal Canadian Air Force.

Hundred units left the assembly line.
