Traian Vuia was a Romanian inventor and aviation pioneer best known in the field of aviation by his first aircraft built in 1905. He claimed a hop of 24 meters which is usually accepted as the first powered flight without assisted takeoff. He never performed a sustained flight even with his second aircraft in 1907. After World War One, he became a French citizen and built two experimental helicopters in 1918 and 1921.
