The Martin XB-51 was a bomber designed from 1945 which made its maiden flight on 1949 and was powered by three General Electric J47 turbojets (two slung in nacelles under the front fuselage, the third one at the base of the tailfin) with a swept mid wing. The second prototype crashed on 9 May 1952 during low-level aerobatics over Edwards AFB, killing the pilot. Its programm was already cancelled (in 1951) in favor of the English Electric Canberra which eventually built under license as Martin B-57 Canberra. On 25 March 1956, the first XB-51 prototype, crashed in sand dunes near Biggs Air Force Base, El Paso, Texas, killing both crew, while staging to Eglin AFB, Florida, for filming of scenes for Toward the Unknown.
Only two prototypes (46-0685 and 46-0686) have been built.
This page lists all films that feature the Martin XB-51.
