The HAL Tejas is a multirole combat aircraft designed by the Aeronautical Development Agency and manufactured by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) for the Indian Air Force and Indian Navy. In the mid-1980s, the Indian government launched the study of this 4.5-generation aircraft, seeking partnerships where necessary (Dassault in the initial phase, next Lockheed Martin). A foreign radar (that of the Grippen) was also considered, before the government insisted on a national solution. Many other factors slowed down the program, which no longer had the ambition of replacing the MiG-21 (now retired from service), but after the success of the two demonstrators, a pre-production run was built, followed by an initial order for 50 aircraft.
Although the Navy and two-seater versions have been withdrawn from the program, the Mk 1A version is now being produced with more national components, even if the engine is still based on a General Electric F404. The mark 2 is under development.
This page lists all films that feature a variation of the HAL Tejas.
