The Curtiss F9C Sparrowhawk was a light 1930s parasite biplane fighter aircraft. Although designed as a pursuit plane or fighter, due to its modest performance with a top speed of only 176.5 mph (284.0 km/h, 153.4 knots), the Sparrowhawk's primary duty in service was reconnaissance, enabling the airships it served to search a much wider area of ocean. Its small size and a special device were think to allow the aircraft to hook a trapeze carried by the airship. This device was articulated to lift the aircraft into the hangar or place it in the release position. Once on cruise and aboard the airship, the landing gear was replaced by an external fuel tank in order to significantly increase the aircraft's range. Only two prototypes and six production F9C were built and lost with their motherships but one now preserved by the Smithsonian Institution.
