Category:De Bothezat Helicopter

The De Bothezat Helicopter was an experimental helicopter built for the United States Army Air Service by George de Bothezat. Feated with four rotor of six blades each, this design fruit of the collaboration of the mathematician, engineer, businessman and his assistant Ivan Jerome was their submission to the Army's request of 1921. The first flight occured on 18 December 1922 and achieved some success but was ampered by complexity, control difficulties, and high pilot workload. Unable to fly other than downwind or hover, the army terminated the contract in 1924. A patent was registered in 1930 but it took more than another decade before an American aircraft would perform better.
