The Heinkel He 280 was a German prototype for a turbojet-powered fighter aircraft studied from the late 1939 and which made its first flight on 22 September 1940. The first prototype airframe completed was powered by HeS 8 turbojets that encountered considerable production difficulties. Some official lost their interest considering a plane manufacturer should not be the engine's manufacturer too (despite the contemporary and successful Junkers Ju 88). Eventually, in 1943, Ernst Heinkel switched to the Junkers Jumo 109 turbojet after two crahes (and the first use of an ejection seat) but then delays led the Reichsluftfahrtministerium (the German Reich Aviation Ministry) to favour the Messerschmitt Me 262.
Another innovative point was the tricycle landing gear and the distinctive twin tail with a mid-fuselage straight wing.
