The Nakajima Ki-34 was a twin-engine, low-wing monoplane with the retractable main undercarriage and a tailwheel. Designed first as a civil medium capacity airliner (8 passengers) for Imperial Japanese Airways (Dai Nippon Koku KK) and Manchukuo National Airways (32 airframes known as AT-2), the type was considered as a military transport after the start of the Second Sino-Japanese War in 1937 and fitted with more powerful engines was named AT-1 or Ki-34 by the Army.

351 of all variants have been built from 1937.
