From The Internet Movie Plane Database
a variant of the Naval Aircraft Factory PN (the Martin PM-1) seen in Cavalcade of Aviation (1914 Europe in Flames!).

Design in the United Kingdom during World War One, 227 Felixstowe F5L twin-engine flying boat patrol aircrafts were built by three US manufacturers. During the 1920s, learning from the operational life of these biplane, the American company Naval Aircraft Factory has developed several improved variants under the PN type name. The first machines had wooden hulls and fabric-covered wings, which evolved from sub-type to sub-type, the first of which was a metal hull instead of wood. Single or twin-tail depending the variant and various engines were mounted in nacelles always between the wings with radials finally being retained. The final PN-12 was the most produced by three manufacturers, as follows:

  • Douglas PD-1 (25 ex);
  • 18 PK-1 built by Keystone;
  • 27 PM-1 built for US Navy by Martin and three PM-1B for Brazil.

Even at this stage, a few differences (open or closed cockpit for exemple) can make precise identification difficult.

This page lists all IMPDB pages that feature the Naval Aircraft Factory PN or its Douglas, Keystone and Martin derivatives.
