The Piasecki PV-15 was a tandem-rotor transport helicopter designed by Piasecki Helicopter in the early 1950s. Following the first flight (on 23 October 1953) the first prototype (now YH-16 s/n 50-1269) was evaluated by the United States Air Force and Army which expressed great interest due to the capacity of 43 troops. The type had only two 1,650 hp radials and was underpowered. The second airframe (YH-16A) switched to turboshaft engines was still underpowered. Airframe 50-1269 now converted to YH-16B with two Allison T56 2,100 shp turboshaft engines -the same found on the Lockheed C-130 Hercules till the H subtype- was able to transport 47 troops or 38 stretchers and 5 attendants. Civil project named Piasecki H-16 Transporter was intended for 69 passengers. But on 5 January 1956, one rotor shaft bbroked in flight, which in turn led to the aft blades and forward blades desynchronizing and colliding. The two test pilots were killed in the following crash which led to the cancellation of the program. At the same time, the company enjoyed success with the prototypes of the smallest Piasecki H-21 which quickly entered serie production.
This page lists all films that feature the two prototypes of the Piasecki H-16 Transporter.
