Air Mauritius is the flag carrier airline of Mauritius. The airline is headquartered in Port Louis, Mauritius, with its hub based at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport. Air Mauritius commenced inter island operations in 1972 using Piper Navajos aircraft. In its first 5 years the company was a handling agent only. Airline's first independent international flight was operated in 1977 with wet-leased Boeing 707 from British Airtours. Later, in November 1984, airline leased a Boeing 747SP from South African Airways and flew it on its inauguration flight to London. In April 1988 Air Mauritius received two Boeing 767 to replace 747SPs. In December 2006 Air Mauritius received its first Airbus A340-300. Today, the airline operates fleet of ultra modern long-haul to London, Frankfurt, Paris, Zurich in Europe. Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur and Singapore are served in southeast Asia. Perth in Australia, Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban, Antanarivo and Nairobi are served in Africa. Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai and Bangalore are served in India to serve ex-patriot community. Dubai is served in Middle East. Air Mauritius also operates inter island service at home using ATR 72 aircraft as well as air taxi, medical flights and sight seeing tours using Bell helicopters.
