Saunders-Roe started the design of the SR.N6 but the first prototype was launched for the first time on 9 March 1965, a year later the company had merged with Westland Aircraft and a year before the hovercraft division was melt with Vickers Supermarine's hovercraft interests to create British Hovercraft Corporation (BHC). This didn't stop the project which entered commercial service in June 1965. Saunders-Roe SR.N6 (also known as the Winchester class) is a medium-sized hovercraft primarily designed for passenger service and capable of accommodating up to 38 passengers. Later stretched variant have a capacity up to 58 seats. The main change was a twin-propeller configuration powered by the same Rolls-Royce Gnome turbine engine. Most operatoes stopped commercial use between 1980 and 2000 mainly due to increasing costs and increased competition.
