Chengdu Aircraft Industry Group (CAIG) -which was first an aircraft builder in the People's Republic of China- designed the Wing Loong II for use as a surveillance and aerial reconnaissance and precision strike platform. Unveiled at the Aviation Expo China in Beijing in September 2015, this unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) is used since 2017 mainly for its long range strike capability with a satellite link. For Western people, it is of the same class as the General Atomics MQ-9 Reaper. Named by the Chinese armed forces as the GJ-2, this UAV is in service in about ten countries. Its flexibility led to use some of them as communication and radio relay during the 2021 flooding.
