Convair XF2Y-1 Sea Dart prototype seen in Ep. 1.01 of Sea Hunt.

The Convair F2Y Sea Dart was an experimental seaplane fighter aircraft. Design was impulse by a 1948 request of the U.S. Navy for a supersonic interceptor aircraft. The maiden flight occured on 14 January 1953. The first drawing relied on two retractable skis but later the first prototype was modified with a single large ski. Despite its lack of power (the intended engine was not available and the airframes were fitted with Westinghouse J34 turbojets developing half the desired power), the aircraft reached the supersonic speed during a swallow dive but was limited by actual knowledge (no area rule shape). With the progress registered by carrier based aircraft, the Navy lost interest with this program. At the same time, the second prototype broke in the air killing the test pilot. The last two aircraft never flew and all the four airframes are now displayed in museum.

Only five Convair F2Y Sea Dart were built.

This page lists all films that feature a variation of the Convair F2Y Sea Dart.
