The Manned Maneuvering Unit usually named MMU is a add-on to the space suit used by the NASA on three missions during 1984. Designed and produced by Lockheed, this self-contained astronaut backpack propulsion device permits astronauts to perform a variety of extravehicular activities, such as satellite retrieval and rescue operations. The unit is powered by 24 nitrogen gas thrusters.
Through September 1991, Lockheed Martin was award a contract to develop a future smaller successor.
