If you enjoyed our London Airport – Heathrow in the 1960s/70s DVD, you’re going to love this second look at vintage LAP, because it goes back as far as the 1950s. We used a completely new collection of full-colour cine film and authentic sound, to bring aircraft like BOAC and Pan American Stratocruisers alive once more.
Some of the vehicles are almost as interesting as the airliners. There’s a scene on Pan Am’s ramp with Strats and DC6Bs, that’s full of early 1950s vans and trucks dashing about – wonderful stuff.
Several of our cameramen worked airside and could therefore get the best shots and catch some of the rarer visitors. It’s impossible to list them all here, so do have a look at the on-line Factsheet, but my favourite has to be an Air Jordan DC6, or is it the LTU DC4?
The variety is amazing; take Constellations for example. We have Skyways, South African, TWA and Air Ceylon L749s, Lufthansa, KLM, Capitol, Flying Tiger and Air France L1049s, TWA and Trans Atlantica Argentina L1649s.
From the 1960s, there are great airside shots of the British Eagle fleet, a snowbound Heathrow in the winter of 1963, Cubana and Trans Continental Britannias, Air France and SAS CV990s, the actual crash-landing of a BOAC 707 with its nosewheel retracted, the wreckage of the BKS Ambassador crash, VC10 crew training and many other airliners, including:

Written off in Rio de Janeiro 19 June 1961. The aircraft struck an earth mound short of the runway, shearing off the undercarriage. The aircraft continued down the runway for 2/3 mile before coming to rest.

Registration N9701F, c/n 10184. Ex USAF 45-57814 built in 1945. Sold to TWA as N2047A; then reg. ET-T-12 (Ethiopian Airlines). Re-registered as N9701F nicknamed Ontos (with jet-pod on top of fuselage-Conversion in 1962 with 3,400 lbf (15 kN) Westinghouse J34-WE-36 booster engine.). Carried spare engines and parts to broken "Connies" at European and Mid-Eastern airports in the 60s. Aftewards, sold to Briles Wing & Helicopter, to Northern Pacific Transport, Inc, to Hawkins and Powers. Carried helicopters to Bolivia, Peru and Chile in 1970s. In 1980s used as a freighter in Alaska. In Oct. 2006 was flown from Greybull, Wyoming to the Hagerstown Aviation Museum.

Sold to Air Jordan on September 1960, then went back as N90702 for Foreign Air Transport Development on September 1961 and operated with International Airlines. Re-registered HP-361 on November 1962. Changed for Aerovias Panama on January 1963. Again to International Airlines as N90702 on July 1964. The aircraft ended her life in Germany as D-ABAH for several companies: Luft-Lloyd GmbH in 1965, H Kohler KG, Sudwestflug, Contracta KG on January 1966, then Sudwestflug again. Sold to Germanair on October 1968. Stored few years later.

On February 1975, the airplane was leased to East African Airways, then Zambia Airways on March 1975, Syrian Arab Airlines on July 1975, Pakistan International Airlines on September 1975, Malaysia Airlines on November 1975, Nigeria Airways on January 1976, again to Syrian Arab Airlines on February 1976, Pakistan International Airlines on April 1976, Britannia Airways on May 1976, again to Nigeria Airways on August 1976, then British Midland Airways again on December 1976. Leased to Kenya Airways on May 1977, then to Kuwait Airways on May 1978, then to Pakistan International Airlines again on September 1978. Purchased by Jet Power Inc as N3791G on July 1980, then scrapped.
