Tirana Airport

Due to the Enver Hoxha isolationist communist regime in Albania, during the 1970s air travel was quite rare. The airport was constructed from 1955 to 1957 at Rinas ('Aeroporti Rinas') with this control tower :

With the collapse of communism in Albania in 1991, the traffic increased by seven times before the end of the millennium. On 23 April 2005, for a 20-year concession period, a concession included the construction of a completely new passenger terminal and various infrastructure improvements.
It is now named Tirana International Airport Nënë Tereza (Albanian: Aeroporti Ndërkombëtar i Tiranës Nënë Tereza, IATA: TIA, ICAO: LATI) honoring Mother Teresa (born Mary Teresa Bojaxhiu, 26 August 1910 – 5 September 1997).
