When a civil war breaks out in Navorski's fictional home country of Krakhozia, the U.S. State Department revokes all Krakhozian visas, and without a functioning government, his passport allowing him to go home is no longer valid. Stuck in a 'crack' in the system, Navorski is forced to live in the International Transit Lounge, where he creates friendships with the airport staff and one particular flight attendant.
