The English Electric Lightning was a supersonic jet fighter aircraft renowned for its capabilities as an interceptor. English Electric was later incorporated into the British Aircraft Corporation, with later versions being developed and mostly produced as the BAC Lightning. The Lightning was used throughout much of its service life by the Royal Air Force and the Royal Saudi Air Force. Since it first flew in 1954, around 330 aircraft have been produced, with the RAF operating theirs between 1959 and 1988.
