British Midland Airways Limited was an airline of the United Kingdom which flew to destinations in Europe, the Middle East, Africa, North America and Central Asia from its operational base at London Heathrow Airport. The history of the company begins in 1938 as Air Schools Ltd, a school for training pilots of the RAF Volunteer Reserve. A parent company named Derby Aviation Ltd was created in 1946 for charter and freight flight, followed by Derby Airways in 1959. In 1964, after a merge with Mercury Airlines, the airline was renamed BMA-British Midland Airways. In 2000, Scandinavian Airlines System (SAS), a shareholder in British Midland since 1987, sold half its stake to Lufthansa followed by British Midland joining Star Alliance the same year. By 2001, the company was rebranded BMI-British Midland International.
