Firebird follows a handsome, soulful young soldier who embarks on a clandestine sexual affair with a charismatic fighter pilot on a Soviet Air Force Base at the height of 1970's Communist rule.

Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-21 MF
Former Polish Air Force Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-21 MF c/n 96A9011 (nose code 9011 red) built in February 1973. One year later, this fighter entered the inventory of the 26 PLM (26 Pułk Lotnictwa Myśliwskiego / 26th Fighter Aviation Regiment). On strength through several regiment until 1999 and eventually Withdrawn From Use in January 2003.
It is one of three aircrafts (along a TS-11 „Iskra”and a Sukhoï Su-22M4) and a Mil Mi-2RL helicopter donated to the Estonian aviation museum in Tartu in 2004.
Now on display under a wide shelter covered with translucent elements resting on a solid wood/metal framework (read the discussion tab).
Most -if not all- of the film's aviation scenes are based on this Mig-21 MF 9011red, which has been digitally modified to remove its unit markings, replace the Polish roundel with the Soviet Red Star... and form a reinforced Warsaw Pact shelter.
Yakovlev Yak-9 Memorial
Yakovlev Yak-9 reach the front line in October 1942 but the memorial celebrates 1941(-1945 ?).

Maybe a Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-3 inspired this stylised aircraft / generic fighter ? (appearance of the wing is very different from the plan drawn up by the design office).
Bell P-39 Airacobra
