1942-1988 : Vozrozhdeniya Island (lit. 'Rebirth Island') was a small island of Aral Sea. From 1954, a biological weapons test site called Aralsk-7 was set up. In 1971, an accidental release of variola virus (or smallpox) from the island infected ten people, of whom three died. By late April 1992, all military units had been evacuated from the base within several weeks. The island (now a peninsula due to the drying up of the Aral Sea for agricultural projects) was left by Russian Armed forces following the disbandment of the Soviet Union. Many of the containers holding biological agents were not properly stored or destroyed so in 2002, a joint United States / Uzbekistan project was organized and identified ten anthrax burial sites which were decontaminated.
The script draws on these elements to evoke the 1980s and beyond through the three main characters.
