North American B-25 Mitchell

Three Mitchells flying by at the beginning of the film. Per this WIX forum discussion, the airframes used were:

  • TB-25N registration N8163H, c/n 108-47501, ex-USAAF serial 44-86747, owned by Planes of Fame Air Museum at time of filming, nowadays preserved at Palm Springs Air Museum in California.
  • TB-25N registration N9117Z, c/n 108-32474, ex-USAAF serial 44-29199, nowadays preserved at the National Museum of World War II Aviation in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Same aircraft in other works at IMPDb: Frequently Seen Aircraft (Military Fixed-Wing).
  • B-25J registration N3156G, c/n 108-47735, ex-USAAF serial 45-8884, nowadays privately owned by Lady Luck LLC based in Minnesota.

In this first screenshot, the second-closest aircraft appears to be N3156G, compare the fuselage striping to the rear of the wing and the dark tail with the lightning bolt to this photo. The furthest Mitchell with the fully enclosed nose may be N8163H, the B-25 History Project has an undated photo of it with a similar nose design. That leaves the closest Mitchell as most likely being N9117Z, seen with a bare metal finish and full glass nose in 1978 here.

Grumman TBF Avenger

Two Avengers flying by at the beginning of the film. One of them is General Motors TBM-3 registration N7075C, c/n 3847, ex- US Navy BuNo 53785. Nowadays owned by Pond Warbirds and displayed at Palm Springs Air Museum. Identity of the other Avenger is unknown.

Bell 222

Registration N50163, c/n 47011 built in 1980. Here used by PHI Air Medical a subsidiary of PHI-Petroleum Helicopters International. Next registrations after 1990: C-GPRH, N981AB, N222ZX.
