The history of the company begins in 1938 as Air Schools Ltd, a school for training pilots of the RAF Volunteer Reserve. A parent company named Derby Aviation Ltd was created in 1946 for charter and freight flight, followed by Derby Airways in 1959. In 1964, after a merge with Mercury Airlines, the airline was renamed BMA-British Midland Airways. In 2000, Scandinavian Airlines System (SAS), a shareholder in British Midland since 1987, sold half its stake to Lufthansa followed by British Midland joining Star Alliance the same year. By 2001, the company was rebranded BMI-British Midland International.
