The Viking was roughly half the size, in terms of mass and power, of the V2 -the German rocket it was intended to supersede. Designed and built by the Glenn L. Martin Company under the direction of the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory, a series of twelve were built and launch between May 1949 and February 1955 of which only one failure occured. The first seven were slim; the five latest have an increased diameter and full triangular fins. The successfull programm led to the Vanguard rocket.
