1930: on the 53rd attempt, Jean Mermoz finally manages to take off from Natal for the first air crossing from Brazil to Dakar. On the Brazilian island of Fernando de Noronha, in the middle of the Atlantic, there's a radio and weather station used to guide l'Aéropostale's seaplanes, but also a Brazilian penitentiary, where a revolt has just broken out that threatens the survival of a few Frenchmen cut off from the world.

Latécoère 28.3

One of the five Latécoère 28.3s built.
One of them registered F-AJNQ Comte de la Vaulx is never seen throughout the movie despite action is set during the famous flight done by Mermoz on this 8 July 1930. After 2,000 km of flight, the aircraft suffered a major oil leak and was forced to ditch, managing to do so near the aviso stationed in its path as a precaution. Contact with the sea was rough, and the damaged left float dragged the plane to the bottom of the ocean after the crew (Mermoz, Gimié and Dabry) and mail had been recovered... facts faithfully recounted throughout the script.
