The Gerner G II is the second aircraft designed by Max Gerner. This engineer was first employed by the German aircraft manufacturer Richard Dietrich. In 1926-1928, when Dietrich moved to Berlin and facing trial for commercial dispute, Gerner left the company an d founded his own design bureau. After the Gerner G I of which one airframe was manufactured, Gerner designed a slighty wider and more powerful airframe still a two-deat in tandem single-engine biplane. If the prototype was powered by a Salmson radial, the production relied on inline engines. A third variant (II RC) fixed an aerodynamic weakness due to the deep, over-wing fuel tank which could blank airflow over the tail and cause loss of control.
In 1934, responsibility for the Gerner II R was taken over by Adler Werke, who produced cars and motorcycles; they retained Max Gerner as designer. After five dozens of Gerner G II R, the sales plummeted. At the instigation of the Ministry, Adler Werke was forced to concentrate on its land-based activities, and Gerner founded a new company which limited itself to repairing Luftwaffe aircraft and producing subassemblies for the main German manufacturers.
