Air Alpes was an air transport company (1961-1981) founded by Michel Ziegler, which began operations in the Alps. The airline played an important role in the development of winter sports, particularly in Courchevel, by dropping wealthy customers off at the foot of the slopes via altiports (the company built its own airstrips at various high-altitude locations).
In the early years, the average number of employees was 6, carrying 4 to 5,000 passengers in 500 to 800 flying hours. From 1967 onwards, the business took off (17 employees, first DHC-6, annual passenger milestone of 10,000). The following year, growth continued with the operation of routes outside the Alps, and even flights to Paris (from 1969). In the early 1970s, the company diversified its aerial activity from passenger transport to cargo flights to supply altiports and mountain refuges, with anti-hail flights (to protect vineyards) and, in Corsica, fire-fighting aerial surveillance (1977). 1971 also saw the signing of a contract with Nepal's Royal Nepal Airlines Corporation to train several crews in mountain flying and altiport landings, ferry 4 Pilatus aircraft to Kathmandu and provide 2 months of technical assistance in Nepal.
The decade continued to see continuous growth, combining the acquisition of 3rd-tier airlines and an alliance with Air France, with the impact of soaring fuel costs leading to the discontinuation of several routes. The fleet underwent constant reorganization, moving from atmospheric engines to turbines, then to jet engine (Corvette, F-28, DC-9), from single-engine to multi-engine aircraft with ever-increasing capacities (F-27) with ventually more two hundred employees and a continuous increase of passenger reaching nearly 200,000 in 1978. Finally, in early 1981, Touraine Air Transport acquired 75% of the shares, then in the autumn absorbed the company, which had itself acquired a majority stake.
