The Messerschmitt Me 309 was a German prototype fighter which first flew on 18 July 1942 despite design started during summer 1940. This aircraft was a private venture of Messerschmitt with the goal to replace the Bf 109. But the Reichsluftfahrtministerium (or RLM for Reich Air Ministry) didn't support this project until nearly eighteen months and when he rised the priority, the type's main features (a pressurized cockpit with an ejection seat, the tricycle landing gear -uncommon especially as the front wheel was under the Daimler-Benz DB 603 inverted V-12 engine- and the laminar flow airfoil) required some testing. Those were tempered by the weakness and trouble both of the brand new DB 603 and the front wheel. If the speed was slighty better than the new Bf 109 G, it was unacceptable low as the 309 was flying free of any armament. Some trouble with the stability were solved by the increase of the tail surface. All those delays led the RLM to cancel the project on 26 January 1943 considering the Focke-Wulf Fw 190 D and the Messerschmitt Me 262 being more promising.

Four prototypes of the Messerschmitt Me 309 have been built.
