Alitalia – Società Aerea Italiana, operating as Alitalia, was the flag carrier and national airline of Italy. The company had its main hub at Leonardo da Vinci-Fiumicino Airport, in Rome. Alitalia's subsidiary Alitalia CityLiner's bases are Naples International Airport and Trieste Airport. The name "Alitalia" was an Italian portmanteau of the words ali (wings), and Italia.
Alitalia – Società Aerea Italiana, was the re-branded name of Alitalia-Compagna Aerea Italiana, that what created in 2009 after bankrupcy of the original state owned company named Alitalia-Linee Aeree Italiane. History of the company started in 1946 as Alitalia –Aerolinee Italiane Internazionali. On 1957, Alitalia merged with LAI- Linee Aeree Italiane and took on the name of Alitalia-Linee Aeree Italiane.
In 2014, the Abu Dhabi-based UAE national airline Etihad Airways confirmed it had agreed to terms with Alitalia on taking a 49% stake in the Italian airline. It was a member of SkyTeam Alliance.
Despite this, the airline entered extraordinary administration in 2017 following years of unprofitability and on 15 October 2021, its operations and assets were transferred to ITA Airways, a new state-owned flag carrier. This putting a final point to 74 years of history.
