The Pan American Goodwill Flight of 1926 and 27 was a public relations goodwill mission to promote U.S. aviation in Central and South America. It was proposed by Maj. Gen. Mason Patrick, chief of the Army Air Corp.Ten distinguished military pilots, with good mechanical skills, were selected to fly the five Loening amphibian airplanes, each named for a city in the United States. This one is San Francisco cn 28312 piloted by Capt. Ira C. Eaker (left) and Lt. Muir S. Fairchild.

Presented as Transcontinental & Western Air Douglas DC-3-383 carrying actress Carole Lombard on TWA Flight 3 on the 16th January of 1942.
Registration NC1946, c/n 3295.

The plane crashed into a near vertical cliff on Potosi Mountain in the Spring Mountain range at 7,770 ft, about 80 ft (24 m) below the top of the cliff and 730 ft (220 m) below the summit, killing all on board instantly.

In the background, another Boeing 707 in an unidentified livery. Would be probably an Air France 328 series if the fuselage stripe were dark blue.
Registration N704PA, c/n 17683/116 ordered by but not taken up by TWA, that's why she has the 331 series usually built for TWA.

Serial seems to be 55-2722 / FW-722; if right, this is North American F-100C-10-NH Super Sabre c/n 222-14 built in 1955 and eventually sold to Turkish AF in 1972. Last known fate in June 2014 : displayed on dummy airfield at Konya Air Base, Turkey.

Fairchild C-123B Provider
Serial 56-4375 (c/n 20259) first used by US Coast Guard as HC-123B. Returned to USAF and later upgrade as C-123K. Converted to VC-123K in 1968 (the sole one); was General Westmoreland's personal transport in Vietnam. Transferred to Reserves as UC-123K. To MASDC (Military Aircraft Storage and Disposition Center) on April 1970, but returned to service. Retired to MASDC as CP059 on September 9, 1981. To El Salvador on March 1984 as FAES 122. Last known fate : in storage at Ilopango AB near San Salvador.

Lockheed Air Express used by Jimmy Walker "campaigning for Mayor of NYC". He was elected in 1926 but the type maiden flight is only in 1928. So this is for his second term.
This aircraft is flanked by GILMORE and smallest GILMORE OIL Co., christened the Gilmore Lion and registered as NC-3057. She ended burnt in 1940 due to extensive dry rot.
