The Boeing 727 is a narrow-body, T-tailed, tri-jet first built in 1963. For over two decades it was the most produced commercial jet until being replaced by the Boeing 737. The 1,832th and last airframe left the assembly line in 1984 and at the start of the 21st century, the 727 remained in service with a few large airlines. Faced with higher fuel costs, increasing restrictions on airport noise, and the extra expenses of maintaining older planes and paying flight engineers' salaries, most major airlines phased out their 727s; they were replaced by twin-engined more fuel-efficient aircraft fitted with quieter high-bypass turbofan design manned by a crew of two pilots and no need of a flight engineer. Major U.S. carrier retired their 727 fleet around the year 2000. So in July 2013, a total of 109 Boeing 727s were in commercial service with 34 airlines; three years later, the total had fallen to 64 airframes in service with 26 airlines. The last scheduled 727 passenger flight was on 13 January 2019.
